During the time I my Clow Card Fortune Shoppe was open on the Gaia Online Mini Shops forum, I did about maybe 5-7 readings. Then I closed it. Why? Well, first of all, all the meanings hadn’t been completely translated. I was working around that, but it took extra time.

The #1 thing that made me close my shop… were the customers, the questioners. Some of them would:

  • Ask vague questions
  • Ask yes / no questions for a spread that doesn’t support them
  • Or ask no question AT ALL!

How could I do a reading for these people if I couldn’t ask the cards the right question? I would get muddled, mysterious answers in reply.

I’ve just recently acquired a copy of Brian Froud’s (yeah, the guy who did the concept art for Labyrinth!) Faeries Oracle. The book that came with it has so much useful information that can also be used with the Clow Cards that I wanted to share a bit of advice on formulating questions to ask the cards.

1. Be specific. Use details like relevant people, places, objects, problems, events, and etc. whenever possible. Also include the time frame of the above details if possible.

2. Ask questions in the right order. Don’t ask a question about something that hasn’t happened yet. The future is not set in stone. Example: Asking, “How will my investment turn out?” when you haven’t made an investment yet. In that case, you would first ask for information regarding what to invest in, or if now is a good time to invest, or if it would be good to invest in a certain opportunity at that time. Remember that readings only give information about probabilities.

3. Active questions are better then passive ones. We have the responsibility and ability to make choices to shape our own future. Oracles such as the Clow Cards are not used to predict “fate”.

Example of a passive question:

“Will I be [x]?”

Example of an active question:

“Would [x] be good for me at this time?”

4. Clarity is a must. You can’t get a clear answer if you don’t have a clear question.

5. Ethics. There are a few ethics you should follow when asking the Clow Cards questions. Just don’t ask about other’s personal lives or feelings. If you want to do a Romance reading, don’t ask about the other party’s feelings, instead ask, “Do me and [x] have a good chance at having a good relationship,” or something along those lines.

Those are some things to keep in mind.

If you don’t have a specific question…

Ask a question like “What should I know about my situation at this time?” or “What do I need to know at the moment?” etc.

I think this is a really important guide. I’ve noticed the same sorts of things working on my own, and having an active, specific question really helps.
